On October 5, 2025, Professor Fumio Koyama, Specially Appointed Professor and Emeritus Professor of Quantum Photonics and Optoelectronics Research Core, received his Certificate of Election as an International Member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) <\/a>during the NAE Annual Meeting held in Washington, D.C. The certificate was presented by NAE Chair James O. Ellis, Jr. and NAE President Tsu-Jae King Liu.<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) was established in 1964 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), which was founded in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. Together with NAS and two other academies, NAE forms part of the U.S. National Academies, a nonprofit organization providing independent advice on science and technology to the U.S. government.
\nElection to the NAE is regarded as one of the highest professional honors in the field of engineering. Following the 2025 election, the Academy comprises 2,487 U.S. members and 336 international members.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Japan, 20 individuals have been elected as International Members of the NAE to date. From the Institute of Science Tokyo, four professors have received this honor \u2014 Honorary Professors Yasuharu Suematsu<\/a>, Kenichi Iga<\/a>, Emeritus Professors Fumio Koyama<\/a>, and Yasufumi Akagi<\/a>\u2014 marking the largest number from any single institution in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n
