I received a promotion as of January 1, 2026.
Biomedical Engineering Research Core
Prof. Akitoshi Okino
My name is Akitoshi Okino and I was promoted to professor at the Biomedical Engineering Research Core of FIRST on Jan. 1, 2026. I hold a dual appointment with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. My specialty has consistently been atmospheric plasma engineering since my student days. Plasma can be utilized not only for material surface treatment such as enhancing adhesion, but for disinfection and virus inactivation, improving drug permeability, drug analysis, and trace element analysis. So, I have applied plasma to fields such as medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. Science Tokyo selected as candidate for University for International Research Excellence accreditation, and the Biomedical Engineering Research Core and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, to which I belong, will play a vital role in medical-engineering collaboration. Moving forward, with the support of collaborators both within and outside our institute, I will responsibly advance interdisciplinary research spanning medicine, dentistry and engineering. I thank you for your continued support.

Microfluidics Research Core
Prof. Takasi Nisisako
As of January 1, 2026, I joined the Institute of Biomedical Engineering as a Professor. I also hold a joint appointment with the Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science and Technology, and my office is located on the second floor of the R2 Building.
Since my initial appointment as an Assistant Professor at the former Precision and Intelligence Laboratory nearly two decades ago, I have pursued research on micro- and nanoscale fluid engineering, with a particular focus on droplet and particle processing technologies, including droplet microfluidics. Building on this foundation, I aim to further strengthen collaborations with researchers in the medical and life science fields and to actively promote interdisciplinary research in biomedical engineering.
I look forward to working with you.
